President Bush may announce an Israeli-U.S. pact on strategic missile defense next week.
Ahead of Bush's May 14-16 visit to Israel, Jerusalem sources said intensive talks are under way with the Pentagon on a proposal to step up the Jewish state's access to its Defense Support Program, a network of satellites that spot hostile missile launches.
Another proposal, broached by some 70 members of Congress in a May 5 letter to Bush, is to station a U.S.-made ground radar in Israel which would significantly expand its early-warning capabilities in any future war with Iran or Syria.
Should a deal be clinched, Bush will likely announce it during his speech at the Knesset, Jerusalem sources said.
